Audi MMI freezes, is slow or keeps restarting – what causes it and how to fix it

If your Audi MMI freezes, responds slowly or keeps restarting while you drive, there are two common causes: outdated MMI software (mainly on cars built between 2015 and 2016), or an old, faulty patch that was used to activate certain features.

Outdated MMI software (MHI2 AUG11)

The software fault is most common on the C7.5 Audi A6, A7, S6, S7, RS6 and RS7 running MHI2_ER_AUG11_S0037 or a similar AUG11 version.

ModelGeneration
Audi A6, S6, RS6C7.5
Audi A7, S7, RS7C7.5

All of these versions can be updated to the latest MHI2_ER_AU57X_K3663 software, which also gives the car factory Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

❗ Important: the instrument cluster has to be updated together with the head unit, otherwise the MMI can keep restarting while you drive!

You can check which system your car has on the Which system is in my car? page, and we cover activating factory Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in detail on the Which systems can Apple CarPlay and Android Auto be activated on? page.

Old, faulty patch (ExceptionList)

The old patching method, still used today by some “experts”, overwrites the ExceptionList file with one they made themselves. The system does not accept it, so over time the head unit's storage fills up with error entries that the MMI can no longer process – which is why it slows down, freezes or restarts.

This fault can also be fixed quickly and easily.
